SLRS Sessions - Our Live Video Series

June 11, 2011

SLRS Sessions – Muckraker

This session was awesome. Why? Because Muckraker brings it, hard, heavy, and loud, every single time. They are a shining example of why Salt Lake City is quickly becoming known for its stoner and doom metal scene. Bob Sutton pounds the skins with authority, Jeremy Sundeas anchors the groove with his thundering bass, and Russ Millham alternately chugs and screams on his Les Paul. And over all of this wondrous cacophony, Sundeas lays down vocals that simultaneously soar over and drive the low down, heavy groove. If you like metal – even if you don’t – watch the first video. If you do, I bet you’ll watch the second and the third, too. And then you’ll want to check them out live. Do so here at Salt Lake Recording Service tonight, June 11th, and at The Doom and Gloom Fest at Burt’s Tiki Lounge on July 22.

SLRS Sessions – Triggers & Slips

Triggers and Slips have been kicking around Utah for three years now in one incarnation or another. They play all over the state, from Salt Lake State Street dives to swanky Park City venues to festival dates like Powellapalooza and Uncle Uncanny’s. Staying true to their country roots has been key to their recent success. 70’s Outlaw Country influences these guys more than anything else, with lead singer Morgan Snow’s voice bearing more than a passing resemblance to that of Waylon Jennings or Tompall Glaser. Zach Griffin and Will Grimshaw hold down the bottom on bass and drums, while John Davis accents everything with electric and lap steel guitars. We know you’ll like this one.

SLRS Sessions – La Farsa

La Farsa goes ALL the way. In fact, mediocrity doesn’t exist in the band’s vocabulary. From their live musical performances to their recently released album, this crew brings it. So when we booked them for the sessions, we knew we were in for a treat. And they didn’t disappoint. La Farsi arrived in all their theatrical glory with their own lighting crew and a mob of “clappers” in tow.

La Farsa is an elegantly lavish musical experience. The range of talent is not unlike a musical treasure chest – every time you reach in, you pull out something different but equally majestic. The cast includes Erin Haley: keyboards, percussion, vocals; Ryan Cron: guitar, bass, vocals; Flora Bernard: drums, guitar, percussion, vocals; Maxwell Scheller: percussion, bass; and Val Spadafora Gleason: violin.

Special props to Aaron Ernst for lighting design and production.

Now, keeping with La Farsa’s philosophy, we invite you to experience this week’s explosive sessions. Remember, audience participation is required.

You can see La Farsa live this Sunday (July 18th) with Mynabird and Calico at The Urban Lounge.

SLRS Sessions – Two and a Half White Guys

Two and a Half White Guys ain’t no Ras Trent reggae band. They exhibit impeccable musicianship and there’s not a single dread lock in the lot. Formed in 1998, these guys have produced 5 albums and toured on both coasts several times. SLUG magazine called their latest record, Gringos, “the best ska album of 2009.” The band consists of Nate Robinson on guitar and vocals, Shaun Thomas on drums, Andy Evans on bass, Dave Howse on guitar, Zach Craigle on alto sax and backing vocals, and Dan Nelson on tenor sax and backing vocals. These guys are tight like a tiger. Enjoy.

You can find Two and a Half White Guys in all the usual places: Facebook, Myspace and their own site. You can also see them live tomorrow night (July 10th) at The Hog Wallow.

The Huckleberries

It’s hot and it’s humid. You’re sitting on the porch in a creaking rocking chair, fanning yourself and clinking ice cubes in your lemonade. Waves of contentment wash over you as you are transported to another time and place by the sound of the blues. This is the feeling you get when you hear The Huckleberries. The band plays straightforward, genuine blues that transform Salt Lake into the South if only for a moment.

The Huckleberries are definitely easy on the ears. Crooning and howling in classic blues form, the three-piece ensemble leaves you wanting more. Band members Zach Parrish, guitar and vocals; Larry Alexander, bass; and BB Melanson, drums; create toe-tapping, hip-shaking music song after song.

SLRS Sessions – Oldtimer

Oldtimer is a band that screams for attention. Intense, cascading riffs with down-tuned guitars and throat-shredding vocals make them one of the best grindcore bands in Salt Lake City. But before you listen to Oldtimer’s session, get comfortable. Sit down, pour yourself a drink and put on some headphones to fully experience the intricacies in each track. The songs are long and complex — definitely worthy of your undivided attention.

The four-piece band formed in late 2007 and features Maxx Johnson on vocals, Dave Jones on bass, Dave McCall on drums, and Matt Miller on guitar. Despite their dark songs about hell, death and doom, they are local boys that enjoy the simple things in life: music, art, skateboarding, and drinking cheap beer.

Oldtimer’s music breaks rules, it shatters windows, it’s organic, and it’s loud. Fortunately, there are no rules in hell. Do yourself a favor and check out a live show. You can see Oldtimer with Dwellers and Kingdom of Magic at Club Vegas on June 22nd.

The Chickens

The Chickens, hatched locally in Salt Lake, visited the studio to record three songs for the SLRS Sessions. The result? “Eggs”. Just as we expected. The high caliber of music that this group has been putting out over a short period of time is truly exceptional. These six musicians, all of whom play in other local bands, began collaborating early this year and are already producing heavy, wide-ranging sound and energy.

By design, there is no set game plan when The Chickens record. While none of them run around headless, the band’s philosophy lends itself to capturing musical moments versus producing rehearsed “pieces.” Getting caught up in these musical moments is natural, even for members of the band. Just ask bass player Andy “The Back” Evans, who earned his new nickname during this session by repeatedly blocking Derek Howa on the Rhodes piano and facing away from the camera. Other (fully visible) members of the band include Dan Nelson, tenor sax and composition; Shaun Thomas, drums; Dave Salmon, guitar; and Josh Francis, trumpet.

To our delight, The Chickens brought more than “Eggs” to the set by adding “Pox” and “Afro Pete”. They delivered a musical experience of epic proportions in the studio. We hope you’ll enjoy this installment as much as we did.

You can find The Chickens on Facebook.

Red Rock Hot Club

The latest installment in our video series is Red Rock Hot Club. They are a three piece “gypsy jazz” combo consisting of Rich Daigle and Pat Terry on guitar, and Scott Terry on bass. They recorded two Django Reinhardt tunes – “Minor Blues” and “Nuages”, and the classic Marks/Simon composition “All of Me”. Catch these guys around town. They’ll blow your mind. Until next week.

Koko & Camaro – 41 Days 41 Nights

Koko and Camaro are Salt Lake City musicians Greg Midgley and Scott Harker. Their sound is something that they describe as “Howling Wolf meets the RZA.” We didn’t quite know what to expect when they came into the studio this past Wednesday, and they didn’t either. But the results are undeniable. This was one of our favorite sessions to date. Enjoy.

Salt Lake Recording Service is proud to present Morgan Snow, of Triggers and Slips, as the first artist in our new live video series.

Recorded and filmed at Salt Lake Recording Service
Engineering and mixing: Brad McCarley
Assistant engineer and post production: Nathan Tomlinson

Morgan Snow is a local singer songwriter living in Salt Lake City. You will hear elements of folk, rock, and country in his music. Morgan’s strong voice and his gritty stripped down songwriting style reflects his personal observations of the dark corners in life and the well-lit conversations along the way. Look for this artist playing locally as either a solo act, or with his full band, Triggers and Slips.
